On March 16, 2024, the Charlotte Chess Center hosted our Rapid & Blitz event at the CCC Main/South location. Players of all strengths, including Grandmasters Daniel Naroditsky and Olexandr Bortnyk, participated in a day of quick chess, featuring a five-round rapid tournament and nine rounds of blitz.
Rapid
In our previous Rapid & Blitz event, Chase Bellamy was amongst a bevy of players tying for first in the rapid portion with 4/5. This time around, Chase won it outright. He ceded only a last-round "grandmaster draw" against Lokruth Patil to clinch clear first place with 4.5/5, netting $120 for his performance.
Four players tied for second-through-fifth place behind Bellamy with 4/5 each and took home $30: Han Schut, Kishan Karthigeyan, Smayan Ammasani, and the aforementioned Lokruth Patil.
Other prize winners were:
Ishaan Ballal, Musa Naushad, Naitik Rathi, and Vihaan Purohit (Top U1800 - $10 each)
Trishona Kumar and Luis Ramos (Top U1600 - $20 each)
Charles Cameron (Top U1400 - $40)
Michael Powell (Top U1200 - $40)
Blitz
Grandmasters Daniel Naroditsky and Olexandr Bortnyk tied for first place in the blitz event, drawing their game against each other and sweeping the rest of the field. With 8.5/9, and no other competitors finishing above 6.5, it was a dominant performance from the two GMs. There was a moment, entering the eighth round, when three other players in the top ten of the standings were undefeated - apart from losses to both Danya and Bortnyk!
The two GMs earned $150 each for shared first place, with FM Donald Johnson scoring 6.5/9 and winning $60 for clear third.
Other prize winners:
WFM Devina Devagharan and Karthikeya Malireddy (Top U2100 - $30 each)
Smayan Ammasani and Alex Kaelin (Top U1900 - $30 each)
Luis Ramos (Top U1700 - $40)
Benjamin Raz and Samanyu Ammasani (Top U1500 - $20 each)
Michael Powell (Top U1300 - $40)
We hope to see you at the next Rapid and Blitz event on April 6!
